Our assignment was to create a 1-2 minute sound piece in any environment, telling a story through sound. On my commute to school one day, I recorded a slack guitar artist in the F train subway station. He was singing the lyrics to a traditional folk song called “Hand Me Down My Walkin’ Cane“. I loved the natural feel and reverberation of his guitar rhythms inside the subway station, intermixed with the deep rushing sounds of the subway coming and going on the tracks. I decided to use this sound piece as the basis for our assignment to tell the story of a man on a journey.
